This accession contains files relating to gathering of intelligence information at Canadian ports by the Directorate of Intelligence, Department of National Defence, between 1959-1969. The files primarily contain physical data on Soviet bloc merchant vessels, taken openly and covertly, while the ships were visiting Canadian ports. The records include information related to the ships' communications systems and ship design and construction, as well as profiles of their operational personnel. The records consist almost exclusively of material relating to the ships themselves, rather than the activities carried out by the Directorate of Intelligence, and contain the following: photographs of ships, ships papers, customs documents, repair reports, activity reports and miscellaneous port of entry documents. The statistics on foreign merchant vessels are arranged alphabetically by names of vessels.
