The original building of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings was constructed starting in 1859, and survived until February 3, 1916 when a fire broke out. The building was completely destroyed with the exception of the Library of Parliament. Redesign and rebuilding of the building was started immediately, with Parliament occupying the Victoria Memorial Museum Building (now the Museum of Nature in Ottawa) until construction was finished. This listing consists of drawings (blueprints) created under the oversight of John A. Pearson and Jean-Omer Marchand for the rebuilding of the Parliament Buildings.

These drawings consist of overall elevation and plan drawings as well as detail drawings of both structural and aesthetic nature. Drawings were created by: John A. Pearson, Darling & Pearson Architects, J. O. Marchand, Associate; Dominion Bridge Co. Limited; and P. Lyall & Sons Construction Co. Ltd.

In addition to the drawings used for the reconstruction, there are a series of drawings from the renovations of the West Block of the Parliament Buildings which was performed in 1960. These drawings consist of technical drawings relating to the overall structural design and modifications, as well as the mechanical and electrical design for the alterations. This set of drawings were created under the oversight of Mathers & Haldenby Architects, with C. D. Carruthers (structural) and Wm. H. J. Kitchen (mechanical) as the Professional Engineers of Ontario who were responsible for signing off on the design.

Blueprints vary in size. Dimensions of the material found in the finding aid were taken along right side and bottom of page. Many pages are not cut evenly, and thus may have a larger dimension than shown.

Note on the state of conservation:

Some drawings are damaged.

Custodial history:

Transferred from the Parliamentary Precinct in October 2004. Records had been on loan from the Plans Room of Public Works and Government Service Canada, National Captial Region Office.
