Part of the Official Documentation File issued by the Chief Electoral Officer for each riding, an election writ instructs a Returning Officer to conduct an election. The writ is then used by the Returning Officer to record the name of the winning candidate for each riding. These documents are the legal instrument by which a candidate becomes a Member of Parliament. The writ itself is a formal, prestigious document which both begins and ends an election (including a by-election).
