This accession consists of files relating to lands in Toronto, particularly around the harbour front. The subjects include applications for patents and grants by various parties for many purposes. These include railway companies such as the Great Western, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National; barracks and garrisons; a lunatic asylum; and requests by the corporation of the City of Toronto for water lots and land for right-of-way. Also of significance is a file describing the site for the parliament buildings of the Province of Ontario. The files contain records dating from 1855, these earliest being created by the Ordinance Lands Branch which was incorporated into the responsibilities of the old federal Department of the Interior. The early files have Interior file numbers; the file jackets, however are those of the Land Division, Development Services Branch, Department of Resources and Development. Some of the later files were consolidated under the Northern Administration and Lands Branch of the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. These files were transferred to the Department of Public Works, Toronto Harbour Lands Division, in 1978 and were used in a special land inventory project. They were transferred to the Government Archives Division of the Public Archives at the completion of this project.
