This series consists of material created and received by Sir John Coape Sherbrooke. These documents relate primarily to his service as Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia during the War of 1812, and as Governor-in-Chief of British North America during negotiations on the US-Canadian border and during exploration of Canada and the expansion of Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Halifax and Kingston.

Included in this series is correspondence to Sherbrooke from a variety of high-ranking officers in military service during the War of 1812, such as Sir George Prevost, Secretary of War Henry Dearborn, and Major General George Stracey Smith, as well Lord Liverpool and Lord Bathurst. Often, correspondence is also addressed to or written by Sherbrooke's official Military Secretary, Thomas Fenn Addison, at Sherbrooke's command. The discussions that took place in these letters deal with topics that include: the management of prisoners of war; military strategy; courts martial; reports on the state of fortifications of the United States military; ship manifests; accounts of the capture of Castine and Machias and the terms of the US surrender; returns of thanks; account of the capture of the sloop "Venture"; exchange of prisoners of war and others.

This series also includes the following on microfilm: Reel A-888: Journals of Sir John, 1809-1818 (volume 1-5); journals of his wife, Lady Katherine Pyndar Sherbrooke, 1811-1818 (volumes 6-13); correspondence, 1813-1830; troops returns, military records, addresses and replies, 1814-1818; and accounts, 1809-1819 (volumes 1-5). Reel A-887: an "out-letter book", 1813-1814 (volume 22); and a farewell address to Sir John Coape Sherbrooke (volume 23).

Custodial history:

The majority of this material was acquired through auction in 2013. The remainder was acquired via family donation in 1970 and 1971.
