Aquarelle de la main du Français Charles Geoffroy-Dechaume qui a participé à la 5e mission d'artistes aux armées en juin 1917. L'oeuvre représente le cratère de la crête Hawthorn à Beaumont-Hamel. Il s'agit de la seule oeuvre connue de ce paysage qui aurait été faite sur place par un contemporain.

Le cratère de la crête Hawthorn a été produit par une puissante mine qu'on a fait exploser sous une place forte allemande le premier jour de la bataille de la Somme, le 1er juillet 1916. Plus de 700 soldats du 1er bataillon du Royal Newfoundland Regiment ont été parmi les victimes de ce premier jour; des 801 hommes qui ont quitté les tranchées, il n'y en a eu que 69 pour répondre à l'appel à la fin de la journée. Le gouvernement terre-neuvien a acheté le site de 84 acres et en a créé le Monument commémoratif terre-neuvien de Beaumont-Hamel en 1925.
