The Paterson Foundation is a private, charitable foundation bearing the name of Senator Norman McLeod Paterson. The Foundation was incorporated under the laws of the Province of Ontario in 1970 and has been a devoted supporter of community organizations in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. It is composed of a Board of Directors that meet semi-annually to make decisions regarding received applications and other foundation activities. Through the Foundation, grants are given to charitable and non-profit organizations with an emphasis on projects and programs in the areas of education, health care, religion, social welfare and/or the arts. Shortly after the death of the Honourable Senator Norman M. Paterson, the Foundation became the sole beneficiary of his estate. Today, the Paterson Foundation reviews an average of 400 applications for funding every year. In 2004 - 34 years after its inception - the Foundation began dispensing an average of half a billion dollars annually to 80 different organizations, including Harbour Youth Services, Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Shelter House, Lakehead University's ATAC Building, the Northern Cancer Research Foundation and the United Way, to name a few.

Records in this series pertain to the incorporation of the Foundation in 1970, which document the beginning stages of its operations. It contains files on the various organizations that have applied for grants and ones that have received funding from the Foundation. Also included in these files are Directors' minute books, financial statements, circular to Directors, lists of donations, correspondence, applications and grants files from schools, hospitals, churches, universities, art festivals, sports organizations, Aboriginal organizations, libraries, museums, and other societies.
