This fonds consists of records relating to the Right Honourable Herb Gray's life and career. This includes documenting his political career as a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister, and his post-political career.

The fonds has been arranged into 20 series reflecting the unique activities of the creator, the roles he has held, and the organizations he has worked with. The series are as follows: Minister of National Revenue (1965-1973); Member of Parliament I (1960-1983); Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (1969-1974); President of the Treasury Board (1977-1984); Mixed Ministries (1979-1984); Minister of Regional Economic Expansion (1979-1982); Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce (1961, 1972-1983); Solicitor General of Canada (1986, 1992-1997); House of Commons Correspondence (1994-2001); Special Projects (1972-1974); Leader of the Official Opposition (1988-1990); Constituency Series (1979-2000); Political (1978-1984); Appointments (1972-1983); Member of Parliament II (1977-2000); Deputy Prime Minister (1990-2002); Speeches (1962-1984); Personal (1960-1969); House Opposition Leader (1986-1988); and Framed photos, certificates and awards (1963-1986).

Gray, Herb, 1931-2014 : Herb Gray was born in Windsor, Ontario, May 25th, 1931. He was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Windsor West in 1962 and was re-elected in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1993, 1997, and 2000. In total, Mr. Gray served thirteen consecutive mandates and was Member of Parliament for 39 years, 6 months, and 26 days.

From 1966 to 1968, Mr. Gray served as Chairman of the House of Commons Committee on Finance and in 1968, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance. He was first appointed to Cabinet in October 1969 as Minister without Portfolio, becoming the country's first Jewish Cabinet Minister. In the subsequent years, Mr. Gray held the following appointments: Minister of National Revenue, 1970-1972; Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, 1972-1974; Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce, 1980-1982; Minister of Regional Economic Expansion, 1982; President of Treasury Board, 1982-1984, Solicitor General of Canada, 1993-1997, and Minister responsible for the Millennium Bureau of Canada, 1998-2002. He also served as Regional Minister for Ontario from 1981-1984, and from 1993-2002.

In addition to his work as a Cabinet Minister, Mr. Gray also served as the Official Opposition House Leader from 1984-1990, and as acting Leader of the Official Opposition in 1990. He also served as Finance Critic from 1991-1993. In 1997, Mr. Gray was named Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and held the position until 2002.

Mr. Gray retired from his role as a Member of Parliament in 2002. He was granted the title "Right Honourable" by then Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson. Following his work as a parliamentarian, Mr. Gray was appointed Canadian Chair of the International Joint Commission in 2002. In 2003, Mr. Gray became a Companion of the Order of Canada. Mr. Gray became Chancellor of Carleton University in 2008.

Herb Gray died April 21, 2014, at the age of 82.
