Early sketches include a portfolio of European or English scenes and technical drawings or diagrams of tools as well as two pages of formulae and equations.

This series includes a caricature drawing in pen and black ink, depicting: William McDougall and D.R. Cameron attempting to cross a fence and enter Canada, with Riel in the background near Fort Garry waving a sword and threatening them; possibly from the time they were part of an Executive Council sent to the Red River. There are also three watercolours: one of a man in uniform at Galt, one of the Bala Pass and another of the village of Chowpoon during the Bhootan Indian campaign.

Physical description note:

Portfolio has brown cloth covers with red/brown tooled binding, spine and corner reinforcements; red/brown ribbon tie. Sketches are on wove art paper.
