The series documents the career of Paul Edgar Martin before his entry into politics in 1988, notably, his years in business with the shipping company Canada Steamship Lines (CSL). Paul Martin was named to the board of directors of CSL in 1970. In 1973, he was named president of the company, owned at the time by Power Corporation. In 1981, he became co-owner, with Laurence Pathy, and later became the sole owner in 1988. Following his election to the House of Commons, Paul Martin resigned his position as president of CSL in December 1988. He retained ownership of the firm until 2003, when he transferred control to his sons, James, Paul and David. The series provides information on Paul Martin's growing interest in politics over the years.

The series contains speeches, correspondence and press clippings.
