The records from the central registry system relate to the broad range of government policy, including but not limited to: foreign relations, federal-provincial relations, national resources, communications, rural development, cultural development, defence and security, research and science, government organization and procedure, constitutional questions, trade, transportation and other matters considered by Cabinet Committees, interdepartmental and general committees. The records contain official correspondence of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretariat on these matters.

The privy council offices card index includes a nominal (name) index and a subject index. The subject index refer to central registry file numbers and titles and may also include: descriptions of information found in files, cross-references to other subjects, and in some cases, cross-references to Cabinet Conclusions and Cabinet Documents.
