The "super-ministry" was charged with formulating and developing "new and comprehensive policies in relation to the activities of the Government of Canada that affect the welfare of the individual and social development". Composed of three main branches, the Finance and Coordination Branch, the Program Delivery Branch, and the Income Support and Transfer Payments Branch, the Ministry was abolished (effective September 1, 1984) by Order in Council (P.C. 3037 of August 31, 1984).
