The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River together form a dangerous and a critical path for the flow of commerce. This navigable system is vital to the exportation of grain. Accidents and damages occurring aboard Paterson vessels was not uncommon. These events were compiled, filed and registered by captains and officers within the Steamship Division. Each file of this sub-series contains important details on crew accidents, ship damages, ship repairs as well as additional historical information on the vessels. This information can be used by researchers to construct the history of vessels, their values and any replacement costs. They will be able to compile data to study and analyze the life and the social conditions of crews at sea. The files also contain information on particular events such as labour problems, strikes, groundings and collisions. The files detail all Paterson fleet casualties over the past 46 years (from 1955 to 2001). Records related to causalities before 1955 are included through insurance files and files from the administrative, financial and operational sub-series. Researchers will also find in this sub-series documents on vessels bought and sold, old and new tonnage and repairs.
