Upon the retirement of the Chief Nursing Consultant in 1967, her assistant, the Public Health Nursing Consultant, assumed the office, which was renamed the Principal Nursing Officer (PNO) and moved to the Office of the Deputy Minister in September 1968. The role of the PNO is to advise the Deputy Minister and other senior departmental officials on all matters relating to nursing within the department, as well as related nursing issues within and outside Canada. She also maintains ongoing communication with Health and Welfare Branches and other government agencies interested and involved in nursing. The office became defunct in 1994.
The records in this accession consist of several large blocks of material. "Speeches and Addresses" (Boxes 1-16) consists of files containing speeches (some of which may have been delivered by the PNO), and other related documentation, often relating to the conference at which the address was given. Further conference material is found in boxes 37-38. General operational files, including subject files on information services and studies and surveys are found in boxes 16-19. Boxes 20-27 consist of subject files relating to the various associations with which the PNO interacted (such as the Canadian Nurses Associations, the Canadian Nurses Federation, and the Canadian Red Cross Society). Boxes 27-36 contain files on committee activity, (i.e. The Departmental Advisory Committee on Status of Women Concerns, the Family Planning Advisory Committee, the Federal/Provincial Advisory Committee on Health Manpower, and the International Council of Nurses).
