The records in this series consist of Personnel Occurrence Reports for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War. Since more than half of the RCAF enlisted personnel served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and other Allied Air Forces, it was necessary to track those individuals to ensure their personnel records were accurate and up to date. In essence, RCAF Headquarters needed to collect the information found in the Part II Orders issued by RCAF units, formations and schools, for its personnel not serving with the RCAF. The Personnel Occurrence Report (POR) was the means by which this information was collected.

RAF Groups and Stations and other Air Forces would, as required, produce lists of changes to the status of officers, aircrew, and ground crew, creating separate lists, i.e. PORs, for each nation who had personnel serving with them. A change in status could be a promotion, a movement to another operational unit or training unit, leave, illness, casualty, death, release or receipt of an honour or award. Marriages and births are also mentioned. The PORs for RCAF personnel would then be sent to Ottawa, where Headquarters staff would update the man or woman's personnel record accordingly.

In addition to the PORs for RCAF personnel, the series also includes PORs issued by RAF 45 Group (Transport Command) at Dorval, Quebec. Formerly a unit of RAF Ferry Command, 45 Group had men and women serving with it from the RCAF, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) and the Polish Air Force. This series includes the PORS issued by RAF 45 Group for all four of these air forces.

Custodial history:

The records in this series were compiled during and after the Second World War by the Department of National Defence. In 1948, they were transferred to the custody of the Department of Veterans Affairs War Service Records Division where they were used to support application for post-service benefits. In 1971, all the records of the War Service Records Division were transferred to the then Public Archives of Canada. Library and Archives Canada brought these records under archival control in 2014.
