The item is a journal or album related to the early years of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography (DCB) publishing project, created by Elizabeth W. Loosley, who was Assistant to the General Editor of the project from 1960 to 1965 at University of Toronto Press. Loosley began the journal in 1978 as a personal response to strained relations between Quebec and Canada. She wished to create a record of this successful collaborative effort of francophones and anglophones to write and publish a biographical dictionary of Canada.

The journal includes a typescript memoir of her personal experience with the project (63 pp.); correspondence, including letters relating to her departure in 1965; photographs of individuals involved in the the project; clippings, reviews, and publicity material relating to the early volumes; invitations to social engagements; and some clippings more generally related to Canadian history and national unity. The memoir, in particular, provides a detailed description of the challenges of research, coordination, and editing faced by the bilingual project team in the 1960s, including the roles of key individuals involved like George W. Brown, Marcel Trudel, Jeannette Nicholson, Francess Halpenny, André Vachon, Connie McFarland, Marsh Jeanneret, Eleanor Harman, Celine Dupré, Olga Jurgens, Joan Vassilev, and David Hayne, among others.

Loosley, Elizabeth W., 1911-1994 : Elizabeth W. Loosley was born 23 July 1911 in Hamilton, Ontario, the daughter of Charles F. and Sarah Maud (Magee) Loosley. She obtained a Bachelor of Library Science and worked at the Toronto Public Library as a reference librarian, and other Toronto area libraries. She later obtained a Master of Arts in Adult Education from the University of Chicago. She served in the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. She wrote a number of publications for the American Library Association, or related to Canadian history.

In the early 1950s, Loosley was part of sociology project team, with John R. Seeley and R. Alexander Sim, studying the culture of a postwar suburban community. She co-authored the resulting study, "Crestwood Heights: a study of the culture of suburban life" (New York 1956). After this project, she worked for the Canadian Association for Adult Education, editing its journal "Food for Thought" for several years. Loosley joined the University of Toronto Press in 1960 as Assistant to the General Editor of Dictionary of Canadian Biography, at that time, Dr. George W. Brown. She worked with the project from its beginning until the completion of the first volume in 1965, when she resigned from the project. She died 11 August 1994 at her residence in Burlington, Ontario.
