Fonds consists of an original hand-written 222 page memoir (written between 1945 and 1955) plus a type-written transcription (provided by his family). Gordon Murchison's memoir relates his life story including his experience homesteading in the Canadian West and his four years as a soldier in the First Great War.

Murchison, Gordon, 1889-1960 : Gordon Murchison was born in Ripley, Ontario on November 12th, 1889. He was raised on a farm in Huron County, Ontario. In 1910 he took a homestead in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. In August 1914 he joined the army and, a month later, was sent overseas as part of the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He served in France with the Fifth Canadian Infantry Battalion and later with the First Canadian Division Cavalry until the end of the war. After the war he worked for the Soldiers' Settlement Board as a land inspector, loan advisor, chief appraiser, assistant superintendent, and district superintendent. In 1938 he was appointed director of the Soldiers' Settlement Board of Canada. He piloted the Veteran's Land Act through the parliamentary committee stage and was subsequently appointed director of the Veterans' Land Act. Murchison died in 1960.
