The series consists of records regarding the membership, secretariat, and office management of the Canadian Historical Association (CHA), including records of its day-to-day administration, management, and governance. It holds files of the English language secretary (including Norman Hillmer, Carman Carroll, and T. M. Hunter) and French language secretary (including Jean-Pierre Gagnon and Serge Bernier), roles that had existed since 1926. The language secretaries took on various responsibilities over time in the CHA. Their files hold correspondence, reference publications, and reports. The membership files include records created by the Membership Committee which dealt with dues, questionnaires, the membership directory, types of memberships (sustaining, life time etc.), and membership portfolios. Part of membership dues also included access to subscriptions to CHA publications, which are represented through correspondence with members as well as publishers (including Urban History Review, Historical Review, Labour/Le Travail and others).

Arrangement note:

The four sub-series were originally separate series in the arrangement adopted in the 1980s. They have not been continued in the arrangement of the records transferred after 2000., The files are arranged chronologically within thematic sections (thematic sections are correspondence, Membership Committee, records regarding subscription services, records of the English Language Secretary and French Language Secretary).
