Gibson, Charles Frederick : Charles Frederick Gibson, the son of the Rev. John George Gibson and Alicia Mary Horsford, was born in 1808 in Surrey, England. He joined the British Army in 1825 and travelled to Quebec in the summer of 1827 as an ensign with the 66th (West Berkshire) Regiment of Foot. From 1827 to 1833 Ensign Gibson sketched as he moved with the 66th from Lower Canada (1827-1830) to Upper Canada (1830-1833). He left Canada at the end of 1833, having received a promotion to lieutenant and a new posting to the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot. After serving in Ireland, Gibraltar, and Malta, Gibson returned to Canada in 1841, where he took a staff assignment as Assistant Military Secretary to Major General Sir Jeremiah Dickson, commander of the British Forces in Nova Scotia. Accompanied by his wife, Barbara Fraser, Gibson settled into military life in Halifax, and the couple celebrated the arrival of a daughter, Jessy Maria, in 1842. The following year Gibson received his promotion to captain, but poor health eventually compelled him to leave Halifax and return to Great Britain. He died in England in 1868.
