The records consist of the research files of the Ottawa and Toronto offices of the Canadian Indian Rights Commission and include transcripts of testimony, minutes of the Joint Working Group on Indian Rights and Claims, the Indian Act Revision, and miscellaneous files and documents from the two offices.Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Canadian Indian Rights Commission : The Indian Rights Commission was established in 1977, under a joint sub-committee of Cabinet on Indian Rights and Claims, for the purpose of developing an inventory of claims of status Indians. The Commission was to report on its work to the joint sub-committee and to the National Indian Brotherhood (PC 702, 17 March 1977). It was also ask to assist in the resolution of issues between the Government of Canada and the status Indians of Canada. Its appointment came just after the Indian Claims Commission - an exploratory and advisory body - was wrapped up. The Commissioners were: E. Patrick Hartt, of the Supreme Court of Ontario and Brian G Pratt, of the Indian Claims Commission, Saskatchewan.
