This fonds consists of an 82-page handwritten memoir of the First World War by sergeant Edward E. "Edd" Miller, regimental service number 422827. Miller entitled this document, which he wrote sometime after the war, "My experiences during the Great War, 1914-1918."

Miller was born in Lambton County, Ontario on 19 October 1886. He attested in Winnipeg on 23 April 1915. He served initially with A Company, the Winnipeg Grenadiers, and subsequently with the 8th Battalion, Winnipeg Rifles, known as the "Little Black Devils."

Miller's memoir spans his entire wartime service. He describes recruiting, medical examinations, military bureaucracy, drilling, sports, the ocean passage to Britain, life at Shorncliffe camp, his first impressions of France, soldiers' songs, Christmas, life in the trenches and behind the lines, tanks in action at Courcellette, the fighting at Albert, the death of friends, leave in London and his personal experiences of taking part in attacks.

Miller was wounded at least three times and returned to Winnipeg on 8 February 1917.

Miller, Edward Errel, 1886-1937 : Edward Errel Miller was born at Warwick Village, Lambton County, Ontario on 19 October 1886. He attested into the Winnipeg Grenadiers on 22 March 1915. He was wounded while serving overseas and was subsequently discharged on 10 June 1918. Miller died on 28 October 1937.
