This sub-series consists of field books and notes related to survey work on the international boundary between Canada and the U.S.

Vols. 3270 -- 3289; 4390 --4391 contain 163 office calculation books (field books) and 6 files (wallets) of calculation adjustments that contain data of partial Alaska-Yukon boundary survey conducted at the start of the 20th century. The Gold Rush of the late-19th century forced the boundary between Alaska and Yukon to be clearly delimited. The "Convention between Great Britain and the United States of America for the Adjustment of the Boundary Between the Dominion of Canada and the Territory of Alaska", signed at Washington, January 24, 1903, created a tribunal that delivered an arbitration award later that year about the Alaska's southeast boundary. Survey work then commenced for delimiting the Alaska-Yukon boundary. Under the Convention's authority, W.F. King (Dominion Astronomer) and O.H. Tittman (Superintendent, US Coast & Geodetic Survey) were appointed commissioners to the International Boundary Commission to oversee this task. From 1906 to 1913, the survey of the Alaska-Yukon boundary (141st meridian west) took place.

Vols. 6178 -- 6226 contain 770 field books of survey data conducted all along Canadian-United States boundary during the 20th century.The other parts of the boundary between Canada and United States were surveyed and established during the 20th century. The International Boundary Commission was responsible for that task and still is.

This sub-series consists of two black and white photographs of Surveyors. See attached item descriptions for details.

This sub-series also consists of a collection of photographs from the work of the North American Boundary Commission in 1872-1875.

International Boundary Commission : The 1783 Treaty of Paris both ended the American Revolutionary War, acknowledging the existence of United States, and set the boundaries between the British Empire in North America and the United States. Since then, different treaties tried to define and refine that boundary. These treaties eventually led to the creation of a permanent international commission.

In 1908, the signing of the "Treaty between Great Britain and The United States providing for the more complete definition and demarcation of the international boundary between the Dominion of Canada and the United States, signed at Washington" created the International Boundary Commission (IBC).

As with all of its predecessors, the Commission was supposed to be temporary. The signing of the "Treaty between the United States of America and His Britannic Majesty, in Respect of the Dominion of Canada to Define More Accurately at Certain Points and to Complete the International Boundary Between the United States and Canada and to Maintain the Demarcation of That Boundary", signed at Washington on February 24, 1925, made the Commission a permanent body. The Commission remains active to this day and the sitting Surveyor General of Canada serves as the Canadian Commissioner, governed by the International Boundary Commission Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. I-16).
