This series includes MRRM corporate records (0.25 m. of textual records, 1862-1995), subject files (0.4 m., 1862-1995, volume 129), chronological files (0.4 m., 1893-1985), labour files (including payroll files, 0.2 m., 1882-1975), property records (mainly concerning properties in Montreal and Vancouver, 0.4 m., 1890-1964, vol. 130-133), rice contracts and deliveries (statistics, reports and financial records, 0.1 m., 1926-1955, vol. 133), financial records (statements and monthly accounts, 0.3 m., 1908-1990, vol. 133-136) and codes (0.05 m., 1906-1929, vol. 136-141).Additional information:General note:Mount Royal Rice Mills (MRRM) was incorporated in 1882 and opened for business shortly thereafter. The original investors included Robert Reford, Jonathon Dillon, Thomas Brigham Hall, John S. Hall and silent partner William Ross.
At the end of the First World War, the MRRM was caught out in the purchase of a large quantity of rice which it was forced to sell at a loss. This led to a financial crisis within the firm. The solution to the problem was complete financial reorganization whereby a new company was formed to take over the old firm. The new Mount Royal Milling & Mfg. Coy. continued to have financial difficulties. A second reorganization was carried out in 1929 with a new Mount Royal Rice Mills Ltd. taking over the 1921 company.
During the Post-war era, the company was again faced with the prospect of tariff revision.To meet this increasing competition MRRM actively searched for ways of improving both its marketing and the products it sold. This effort was successfully capped by its introduction of canned rice in 1950. These efforts insured that MRRM remained a consistently profitable business. By the late 1960s, MRRM had a succession of suitors, including Maple Leaf Mills and Nabisco. However, instead of selling the company, the Refords decided to build a new mill in Windsor, Ontario. This move was prompted both by continued prospects of growth but also by the pending obsolescence of the original site mill site on the Lachine Canal.Source:Private -
