Fonds consists of records from Ian Reilly's career as a labour union representative.

The records include texts of presentations and photographs documenting the Boot and Shoe Workers' Union (BSWU) and a video documentary and publications discussing the conflict over the Newfoundland fishery union between the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW).

The fonds also includes two collective agreements (1890, 1925) acquired by Mr. Reilly.

Reilly, Ian E., 1940-2010 : Ian E. Reilly, labour leader, was born in 1940 in Toronto. He moved to the Quinte area of Ontario as a child. When he was 12, he led a successful strike while working on a farm. After receiving lower wages than he and the other young boys and teenagers had been promised, he convinced the others to stage a strike. The employer relented later the same day.

In 1956, he was hired by Bata Shoe. He became a steward and union secretary with the Boot and Shoe Workers Union (BSWU). In 1962, he left Bata to become an international representative for the BSWU. After his union merged into the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), he worked extensively on the issue of Newfoundland fishery workers.

In his private life, he was an active volunteer in various social, charitable, educational and genealogical causes and organizations. He died in 2010.

General note:

In 1977, the Boot and Shoe Workers Union (BSWU) merged into Retail Clerks International Union (RCIU). In 1979, the RCIU merged with the Canadian Food and Allied Workers (CFAW) to create the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW).
In March 1987, UFCW Local 1252, representing Newfoundland fishery workers, disaffiliated from the UFCW and joined the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) to become the Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW), CAW Local 465.
