Canada. Dept. of Industry, Trade and Commerce. Office of Design : Created in 1961 in the Department of Trade and Commerce, the National Design Branch was the administrative arm of the National Design Council (Act for the Establishment of a National Design Council, R.S.C., 1961, c. 24).

The National Design Branch was subdivided into four divisions: Industry Advisory, Design Research and Product Development, Professional Development, and Program Administration.

In 1963, National Design Branch moved to the newly created Department of Industry and became the Office of Design Adviser.

In 1969, following the merger of the Department of Industry and the Department of Trade and Commerce, the Office of Design Adviser became the Office of Design under the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce.

In 1976-77, the Office of Design was renamed Design Canada.

In 1983, when the Department of Trade and Commerce was replaced by the Department of Regional Industrial Expansion (Government Organization Act, 1983, c. 167), the National Design Council became the responsibility of the new department and Design Canada followed that change to fulfill its functions.

The National Design Council was revoked in 1987 (Miscellaneous Statute Law Amendment Act, 1987, c. 2, Schedule IV). Design Canada was probably abolished around the same time, having become useless.

Throughout its existence, the activities of the Office of Design / Design Canada can generally fall into one of these categories:
- Providing secretariat services and other support to the National Design Council
- Promotional mandate: developing exhibits, organizing seminars, and administering scholarship and awards programs
- Administering departments' economic development programs (largely those relating to design)
- Providing advisory and counseling services to small and medium enterprise regarding product design and efficiency
