The fonds consists mostly of copies of letters written by Conrad Chapman, while he was the roommate of Lester B. Pearson at St. John's College, Oxford from 1921-1923. The letters are written to Chapman's parents, John Jay Chapman (father) and Elizabeth Winthrop Chapman (step-mother). Some of the letters also refer to his father's half-brother Chanler Armstrong Chapman. These letters contain anecdotes of Pearson's sporting activities on the hockey team and social activities.

Includes three original letters written by Pearson to Chapman after both had completed their studies at Oxford. Two were written in the mid-1920s when Pearson was teaching at the University of Toronto, and his letters describe his university activities and social circle. The third letter was written in 1952 while Pearson was acting as President of the UN General Assembly.

Chapman, Conrad, 1896-1989 : Conrad Chapman was born in 1896 and died in 1989. He earned his undergraduate degree in classics at Harvard - with a break for service in the U.S. Navy during World War I - and then an M.A from Oxford, again in classics (Greats), and a Doctor es Lettres in Byzantine history at the Sorbonne. He shared rooms with Lester Pearson at St. Johns College (Oxford) from 1921 to 1923. He was the headmaster of a boarding school for foreigners in southern France in the late 20s and early 30s, and in the early 1950s was one of the founders of the Nature Conservancy (and later the president of the organization). His father was the noted essayist John Jay Chapman.

Custodial history:

The original letters of Lester B. Pearson to Conrad Chapman were donated to LAC by Chapman's estate.

Copies were made of the letters Conrad Chapman wrote home to his parents in which Pearson is mentioned. The originals are still held by the estate.
