Sub-series consists of lantern slides created and/or maintained by the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). These slides cover a huge range of subject matter and geographical regions across all of Canada and the world. The photographs are organized by the following subjects: anthropology, zoology, physiography, physiography of Canada, geography and topography (including cities, ports, and wharves), geology, economic geology (including mines, quarries, oil and gas), palaeontology, mineralogy, survey camps, transportation, people, foreign views, and chemistry. These slides were likely used to illustrate public lectures and presentations given by GSC staff members. Most are black and white, but some are colour.

Individual photographs were organized by the GSC using a subject based system where the first roman numeral indicates the subject, the second alphanumeric digit or digits the sub-heading, and the last number is a sequential number for each image in that category. For example: III.4.17 which indicates the 17th photograph in the subject Physiography (III) under the sub-heading Underground Waters (4). Some sub-headings were further categorized using a letter and/or other digits, for example III.5.a.22. The subject codes were deduced by archives staff using the original catalogue cards provided by the GSC. Researchers are cautioned that the punctuation between sections of the item numbers is not consistent within the records. Most commonly a space or hyphen is used instead of a period.

Custodial history:

From 1910 to 1959, the GSC was located at the Victoria Memorial Museum in Ottawa and shared its library, including its photographic library, with the National Museum (now the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian Museum of Nature). In 1959, when the GSC moved, the photo library was divided between the Museum and the GSC, with the Museum retaining the anthropological and biological subjects and the GSC keeping geological, geographical, and other subjects.

Original catalogue cards from the GSC which describe the lantern slides in this sub-series are available in accession 1969-120, see Geological Survey of Canada Photographs R214-419-X, FA 45-36_4015232_textual. These cards were formerly known as FA-16, and they include captions, photographers, dates, and subject information for each photograph.
