The reasons for not replying were numerous and varied. These included: the content of the communication was irrational or obscure; the communication was related to a matter that was before the courts at the time it was received; the individual who sent the communication was contacting PMO too frequently (10 times a year or more) for PMO to answer every time; the communication included religious opinions; the language used in the communication was inappropriate; the communication was merely a thank you letter; the communication did not address the Prime Minister; or the communication was simply a comment and no reply was expected. In addition, there were occasions where the Prime Minister might have decided to call the individual or where the correspondence had been forwarded to another section of PMO.
Despite the fact that these messages were not answered, this sub-series shows how citizens engaged with the Prime Minister by way of messages where opinions are expressed about the government's decisions and policies. In general, the topics covered are relatively similar to those covered in the PMC Replied sub-series and reflect the current news of the time.
Worthy of note are various "Special Thank You" messages from Second World War vets regarding Afghanistan received from May to August 2006; correspondence by Canadian author Yann Martel that was later turned into a book; correspondence discussing the coalition and the prorogation of Parliament (Winter 2008-2009); correspondence from VIPs and prominent Canadians such as Rick Hansen, Brian Mulroney, John Turner, Indigenous leaders, Order of Canada recipients, Olympians, etc. Some correspondence from heads of state or other famous people (mostly greeting cards or letters of thanks for greeting cards) are also present.Additional information:Physical description note:Digital records received in the following format(s): JPG (29.9 MB) and DOC (204 KB).Arrangement note:Files are arranged chronologically (first by year, then by month), then alphabetically within each month by last name of correspondent.Source:Private -
