Turnbull, E. Stanley, 1888-1966 : E. Stanley Turnbull (1888-1966) was an artist originally from Ottawa. During his career in Canada he became a senior artist with the Department of Trade and Commerce before becoming a commercial artist in the United States with the Prudential Insurance Company. He studied at the Arts Student League of New York, where his classmates included Norman Rockwell. He directed the Old Mill Art School at Elizabethtown, New York in summers and kept a studio in Grammercy Park, New York for winters. Turnbull specialized in portrait paintings, and his work included portraits of foreign dignitaries and jurists. He won the Bok Award for a portrait painting of an elderly man. Turnbull married Eunice Gilmour and had two children.

Beddoe, Alan, 1893-1975 : Alan Beddoe, artist and heraldry expert, was born in Ottawa in June 1893. He died in Blackburn Hamlet, Ontario on 2 December 1975. He was educated at the Model School and Ashbury College. While serving with the Second Battalion during W.W.I, he was taken prisoner and subsequently sent to Geneva where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1925, Beddoe established the first Commercial Art Studio in Ottawa specializing in Display and Exhibition Art which until 1940 was responsible for many government exhibitions.

He supervised the illumination of the Canadian Books of Remembrance for both World Wars, earning an O.B.E. and the Allied Arts Medal of the Royal Architectural Institute, and in 1957 was appointed Heraldic Adviser to the Royal Canadian Navy, for whom he designed many ship emblems. He designed the badges of 180+ naval vessels of WWII, and designed coats of arms for many Canadian municipalities and institutions. He was involved in the preliminary study for a new Canadian flag. Beddoe also worked privately as a consultant and was the first president of the Heraldry Society of Canada.

This work has been attributed to E. Stanley Turnbull, but this creatorship is not certain.

Custodial history:

This portrait was given to the Beddoe family by the artist Stanley Turnbull, donated by the family to Rideau Hall/Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, transferred as a Crown asset to Library and Archives Canada in 2011, officially made part of LAC's holdings in 2022.
