Series documents the development and delivery of professionalization programs by the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters (CCPFH). The series includes files on workshops, instructional sessions, course materials, planning meetings, roundtables and conferences.

The professionalization programs included: essential skills (literacy and numeracy), managing the fishing enterprise, seal harvesting workshop, co-management, responsible fishing, small vessel operator proficiency (SVOP) and other programs. Also included are records of meetings held between the CCPFH and local fishery organizations held in various regions (British Columbia, Quebec, Nunavut, the Southern Gulf (of St. Lawrence), Scotia Fundy and throughout the Atlantic Provinces).

The series also includes research that laid the groundwork for the professionalization programs including occupational profiles and sector study (research into the fishing industry).

Records include reports, proposals, course materials, meeting minutes, agendas, correspondence, and hand-written notes.

From the CCPFH promotional pamphlet: Professionalization is "the formal recognition by governments and the general public that fish harvesting is a highly skilled occupation equivalent to any skilled trade, technical or business occupation. Professionalization is also about industry groups taking charge of the training agenda and making sure the system is affordable, relevant and accessible.

"The Council's role is to work with regional certification boards, groups and steering committees that are committed to having fish harvesters recognized as professionals. The Council provides national coordination and support for these groups. [...] The Council, its members and partners work to: promote the education and training of Canadian fish harvesters; develop and implement training initiatives that reflect the needs to fish harvesters [...]; have all fish harvesters recognized as belonging to their own professional bodies with acceptable standards and criteria."
