The fonds consists of two pilot's flying log books from the Second World War. The books were kept by Flight Lieutenant John Allan Boyle, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot who flew over 1,744 hours, including 1,408 as an instructor. They detail the flights he made from 1941-44, as well as the types of planes he flew and the activities that were pursued. The log books date from 1941-1944.

The fonds also contains four maps. Two of these are maps of Europe, printed on fabric and likely carried by pilots like Boyle when they flew missions over the continent. The other two are hand-drawn maps of the area around the prisoner of war camp in which Boyles was held. Finally, the fonds contains Boyle's German prisoner of war identification documents, and a letter to a fellow prisoner he wrote at the end of the war.

Boyle, John Allan, 1916-2008 : John Allan 'Ben' Boyle was born at Orillia, Ontario on 10 May 1916. He joined the Dominion Bank on leaving high school in 1934. In 1940 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, trained as a pilot and served as a flight instructor in Canada and Britain. Boyle then transferred to Bomber Command and in July 1944, he was shot down over Europe, captured and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war (PoW). He returned to England five days after the end of the war in Europe. Shortly thereafter, he was awarded the Air Force Cross, which is granted for 'an act or acts of exemplary gallantry while flying, though not in active operations against the enemy.' Ben Boyle then returned to Canada and rejoined the bank, eventually rising to the position of president of the Toronto Dominion Bank. He died at Toronto on 5 December 2008.
