This fonds consists of records documenting Dr. Gregory's activities and research that went into the publication Taking the Bite Out of Rabies: The Evolution of Rabies Management in Canada. This publication and records therein compile the efforts over nearly 150 years in conducting research, management, and eradication of rabies threats to humans, domestic animals and wildlife in Canada. The publication is a multi-authored book with authors drawn from researchers and managers who have played important roles in managing rabies and its control. Records document efforts, solutions and disease control on rabies on regional, national and international scale as well as contributions of the many agencies and persons involved in the successful efforts of diagnosis, prevention and control of rabies.

Records include correspondence (predominantly email); publications; newspaper clippings; pamphlets; reports; notes; and data on the science, organization, approaches and development of programs in rabies prevention and control stemming from provincial and federal agencies, universities and other research institutions. For example their are records from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Health Canada, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and more. In addition, this fonds contains records on the development of the book project such as securing publication support, and the editors approach and methodology to the book's creation. The records date predominantly between 2007 and 2018 when the book was published but contains articles and publications dating back to 1839.

Gregory, David J. 1938-2020 : Dr. David J. Gregory was born on 28 February 1938 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He moved to Canada to complete his education at the University of Guelph where he obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Science, MSc (1965) and a PhD in radiation entomology (1969).

He was the chief of Poultry and Zoonotic Diseases in the Animal Health and Protection Division at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency where he retired in 1999. He was also a member of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Rabies Advisory Committee. In his retirement, he pursued a career as a consultant on national disease control programs and issues under regulatory control for Health Canada, the Canadian Executive Services Overseas in Russia and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr. Gregory co-edited the publication Taking the Bite Out of Rabies: The Evolution of Rabies Management in Canada (July 2020) with Dr. Rowland Tinline.
