Fonds consists of records related to the personal life of Maria Elisabeth Frauenfelder Dufresne. It includes correspondence with family members and romantic partners from the 1940s until her death in 2009, as well as documents related to her education, employment, travel, immigration and citizenship, marriage and divorce. Fonds also includes family photos and a copy of her autobiography, which she wrote shortly before her death.

These records document the full life experience of a woman who was an immigrant to, and later emigrant from, Canada, either through her own writing or correspondence with family and friends. Subjects include, but are not limited to: the Dutch experience in the Second World War under Nazi occupation; immigration to Canada as a war bride; separation and divorce in the late 1950s and 1960s; emigration from Canada to Holland and Portugal; romantic relationships; family relationships and conflicts; and travel.

Frauenfelder Dufresne, Maria Elisabeth, 1925-2009 : Maria Frauenfelder was born in The Hague, Netherlands on 21 April 1925. During the Second World War she met Louis Dufresne, a Quebecer serving in the Canadian Army Pay Corps. They married in August 1946 and Maria immigrated on her own to Canada that October. She first lived with her husband's parents in Quebec City, before moving to Montreal when Louis was discharged from the military. Maria gave birth to a daughter in March 1947. During the 1950s, Maria worked as a hairdresser and cosmetologist, and as a ground hostess for KLM Dutch Airlines at Dorval Airport. Maria had a son in 1957, but her marriage broke down shortly afterwards. She returned to Europe with her two children, though her daughter moved back to Canada permanently in 1965. Maria and Louis were divorced in November of 1968 after being separated since late 1957. Maria and her children lived in both Holland and Portugal, and she travelled extensively throughout her life. Maria visited Canada frequently in later life and corresponded with her ex-husband about family matters. Maria died in the Netherlands on 23 December 2009.

Custodial history:

Donated in 2020 by Susanne Dufresne, daughter of Maria Elisabeth Frauenfelder Dufresne and Louis Dufresne. This collection was initially offered to the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, but after analysis it was determined that the records were a better fit at LAC and transferred here. Item numbers (where indicated), translations, and summaries of the letters were provided by Pier 21.
