From the interview with Brian Brett: "[..] But the real tragedy is the shutting down of all those farms. And the reason why the lamb was so good was because it was all small farm lamb. So these guys, they're like us-when we've got eight ewes or something, we might get, in a good year, 12 to 15 lambs, and those lambs are babied to death.

"And our farms are not just huge factories of grass and stuff, so they're in the bushes, which is one of the reasons why their fur is not highly valued. And so we can't sell the wool because they get brambles and burrs in it and everything because they're all crawling through the bushes and munching all the nice choice stuff and eating ferns and barberries and mahonia and stuff like that. They even eat the fir plants and then the barks off of some of the trees because their body tells them what they're deficient in, and so they can get all these things that you can't just get out of even your best vitamin-enriched feed and all that stuff. So they have a really rich diet and varied diet, and that makes the lamb taste so good. This is why the combination of being babied and then having this great diet is what made Salt Spring lamb so legendary."

Brian Brett is a passionate and diverse award-winning Canadian novelist, critic, and poet. His book, Trauma Farm: A Rebel History of Rural Life, is an often amusing portrayal of rural life interspersed with thought-provoking reflections about the modern world, and rooted throughout by a profound knowledge of biology and botany.

Brett studied literature at Simon Fraser University from 1969 to 1974, which coincided with his entry into the world of writing and publishing. Around this time he also worked in an editorial capacity with several publishing companies including the Governor-General's Award winning Blackfish Press.
