From the interview with David Pauly: "So the whole notion that we have wisdom and of older folks knowing things that the young cannot know, this has taken a real setback. But with regard to the natural world, this is particularly bad. I have a colleague who has studied in the Gulf of California three generations of fishers: 60, 40, and 20 years old. And basically, when the fish are gone, the knowledge about the fish cannot be passed on, and half of it gets lost. She could quantify that half of it gets lost per generation. So when the fish are [there], the knowledge that the first nation or the fishers have, for example-the local traditional knowledge-gets passed on reasonably well because it gets renewed by every encounter with the animal in question. But when the animals are gone, the knowledge becomes superfluous and it passes away, so you can exterminate a species without noticing, actually, over several generations.

"And this is probably what happened in North America 10,000 years ago when 40 species of large mammals were lost. The animals, for example, the mammoth and mastodon and so on, became rare before they were extinguished. That is a thing that we must also realize-that you never exterminate an abundant species. You always exterminate the species that is rare because you have rendered it rare first. So you never have a feeling that you have lost something that was important because it
always goes through two or three generations of being rare.

"So they could have-and there are good simulations suggesting that it could have happened-they could have exterminated 40 species without even knowing about it, without the tradition of them being available having passed on to the next generation."
