Immigration Branch : The Immigration Branch formed one of the four Branches of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration at the time of its creation in 1950 (SC 1949, C. 16). The new Department took over responsibility for immigration from the former Department of Mines and Resources, which was abolished at that time (for additional information pertaining to the history of immigration administration in Canada, see the administrative history for the Immigration Program Sous-Fonds). The Immigration Branch was given the responsibility of administering the Immigration Act as well as overseeing government policy regarding immigration, refugees, border inspection and control. In addition to maintaining five district offices and numerous Canadian ports of entry (a number of other border points were maintained by Customs officials, who acted as ex-officio Immigration officers), the Branch also maintained several offices abroad. These offices were responsible for publicizing Canada in order to attract immigrants; for counselling and selecting suitable and desirable immigrants; and for issuing visas.
In 1966 the Department of Citizenship and Immigration was abolished under the Government Organization Act of that year (SC 1966, C. 25), and was replaced with the Department of Manpower and Immigration, to which the Immigration Branch was transferred. The Branch was subsequently transferred to the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission and Department, which were established under the Employment and Immigration Reorganization Act of 1977 (25-26 Elizabeth II, C. 54).
