Fonds consists of personal correspondence, estate papers and other legal and financial documents concerning members of the Mackay family in Montreal and in Scotland (volumes 1 and 2). This material not only documents the personal and business affairs of the Mackays (including investment in mining in the western United States, 1892-1894), but also reflects the economic, social and political conditions in both Montreal and Scotland.

The fonds also contains various photographs. These include cartes-de-visite by Notman of Hugh Mackay, 1863-1864, and 1872; a mounted 8 by 10 of Mr. Mackay's room, 1889, showing a casket (presumably) that of James Mackay; carte-de-visite (1835-1889) ca. 1860, by "Mr. Teller, London", possibly of Henrietta Gordon; and 6 negatives, ca. 1900, of unidentified man with dog, and of three children.

Mackay, Joseph (family) : Two generations of the Mackay family emigrated from Caithness, Scotland to Montreal. Joseph Mackay arrived first in 1832 and his work as a tailor eventually developed into a wholesale drygoods business. Joseph was followed by his brother Edward in 1840 and by his nephews Hugh, James and Robert Mackay in 1849, 1850 and 1855 respectively. All three nephews eventually joined Joseph Mackay in the family business, later named Mackay Brothers. The Mackays were prominent members of the local and national business communities with presidencies or directorships of such institutions as the Bank of Montreal, the London and Lancashire Life and Fire Insurance Company, the Montreal Rolling Mills, and the Canada Cotton Manufacturing Company.

The Mackays were active politically, particularly on behalf of the Liberal party. Edward declined the Liberal nomination for the provincial riding of Montreal West. Honoré Mercier appointed Hugh Mackay to the Legislative Council on 4 June 1888, but he resigned nine days later due to illness. In 1896 and 1900, Robert Mackay was an unsuccessful candidate, for the Liberals, in the federal elections. He served in the Senate from 1901, until his death in 1916. In 1930, Robert Mackay's daughter, Cairine Reay Wilson, was appointed to the Senate and became Canada's first female Senator.
