Great Britain. National Library of Wales. Tredegar Park Muniments : The Tredegar Park Muniments include the correspondence and accounts of John Bradstreet (1714-1774), King Gould (d.1756) and Charles Gould (1726-1806).

John Bradstreet was born to Anglo-American/Acadian parents at Annapolis Royal, 21 December 1714. In 1735 he obtained an ensign's commission in Richard Phillips' Regiment (40th Foot). He later served in Pepperell's Regiment (51st Foot) and in the Royal Americans (60th Foot). He distinguished himself during the 1745 siege and capture of Louisbourg for which he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor at St. John's, Newfoundland, in 1746, a position he held until his death. He commanded the expedition that captured Fort Frontenac in 1758. In 1764, during Pontiac's uprising, he commanded the force sent to relieve Detroit. His military career was capped when he became a major-general in 1772.

In addition to his military duties, which from 1758 had included the position of Deputy-Quartermaster General in America, John Bradstreet had prospered financially through lucrative trade contracts and land speculation and from the support of influential and powerful persons in England. One ultimately unsuccessful project was the establishment of a colony at Detroit with himself as Governor. He died at New York City on 25 September 1774.

King Gould (d.1756) was the London agent of Richard Phillips' Regiment (40th Foot). His eldest son Charles Gould (afterwards Morgan) (1726-1806) served as John Bradstreet's attorney in London. Charles Gould's grandson was created Baron Tredegar in 1859.
