Fonds also contains sound recordings of: parts of the CBC matinee series Family album that was devoted to the history of Canadian families; various panel discussions and workshops on the situation of Canadian theatre and playrights; and oral histories by Hendry of such actors as Al Waxman, Martha Henry, Heath Lamberts, Diana Leblanc, Margaret Palmer, and Debra Hanson and artistic directors Leon Major and John Hirsch. Fonds also contains a video recording of a press confernce on the release of the task force report on the National Arts Centre that Hendry chaired.
Fonds also contains photographic materials. 46 photographs, ca. 1961-1965, depict the activities of Mr. Tom Hendry as playwright and theatre administrator; scenes from various plays directed by Mr. Hendry; exterior and interior views of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba. 56 photographic positives and slides or transparencies, 1970-1976, depict Tom Hendry in various plays; portraits of Hendry, M. Krause, and members of Theatre Five, Kingston, Ontario.
Fonds also contains prints and drawings. Seven assorted Quebec and Ontario performing arts/gallery posters and one etching, 1971-1978, include the following titles/artists: Schuster Gindin, designer, "Between Two Stools;" Artist unknown, "Meet a Canadian Playwright;" Design workshop, designer, "10th Annual Shaw Festival;" Schuster Gindin, designer, "Capital Offenses;" Artist unknown, "The Empress of China;" John Lloyd, designer, "Jerry Ginsberg's Watercolours at The Evans Gallery;" Artist Unknown, "Jerry Ginsberg's Sixth One Man Show;" David Blostein, artist, "Juggler." Three offset lithograph posters, 1980-1981, pertain to the Banff Festival of the Arts, 1980; the Analytical Psychology Society of Ontario, 1980; and Amnesty International, 1981. 24 drawings, 1959-1975, predominant 1959-1963, relate to the career of Tom Hendry, playwright and arts administrator, including four portraits of Tom Hendry; one drawing of a stylized female figure signed "Desmeules", and a sketchbook of 19 designs, probably relating to the activities of the Manitoba Theatre Centre ca. 1959-1963; four portraits by "Sturd"; sketchbook designs including costume and set designs attributed to Tom Hendry.
Fonds also contains architectural drawings. A planimetric view, dated 1962, relating to renovations of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba; two drawings, dated 1973, pertaining to the stage construction for the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Four elevations, 1970s, for what is believed to be Adelaide Court, a performing arts development in Toronto. 16 architectural, ca. 1977, drawings and sketches for renovations to the building occupied by the Toronto Free Theatre, 24&26 Berkeley Street, Toronto, prepared by Noel Hancock & J. David Simpson, Architects in 1977 for a "phase 2 presentation" to Heritage Canada for renovation funding.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Hendry, Thomas, 1929- : Tom Hendry, playwright, arts administrator, was born in Winnipeg and studied at the University of Manitoba before becoming a chartered accountant. He was a co-founder, with director John Hirsch, of Theatre 77 in 1957 and of the Manitoba Theatre Centre in 1958. He was manager and producer for Rainbow Stage in Winnipeg 1959-1961. After moving to Toronto Hendry became Secretary-General of the Canadian Theatre Centre in 1964. He was literary manager at Stratford Festival 1969-1970 and was a co-founder of Toronto Free Theatre in 1971. He was co-founder of Playwrights Co-op (later Playwrights Canada) in 1971 as well and was director of the Banff Playwrights Colony 1974-1976. During the 1980's Hendry helped to establish the Toronto Arts Council and led a federal task force reporting on the role of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Hendry is the author of numerous plays for the stage, radio and television, including Satyricon produced at Stratford Festival in 1969 and Dr. Selavy's Magic Theatre produced off-Broadway in 1971. Other works include Fifteen Miles of Broken Glass, How Are Things With the Walking Wounded and Hogtown.
For his contributions to Canadian theatre, Hendry has been awarded a Centennial Medal, Lieutenant-Governor's Medal, Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee Medal, Toronto Drama Bench Award and an ACTRA award for best dramatic writer-television.Additional information:General note:Presented between 1974 and 1986 by Tom Hendry, Toronto, Ontario.
