Fonds consists of W.J.A. Wallace's scrapbook which contains various certificates and forms used by the Allied forces in World War II. Included are meal record cards, requests for rations, ration allotments, displaced persons transfer forms, weekly newsletters from the 809 Detachment, photographs, and Wallace's repatriation notice. Additional files in this collection contain: Wallace's autobiography for the period 1901-1970 (70% of which details his World War II service); a radio broadcast by Arthur Mann of the Mutual Broadcasting system, 26 September 1944, detailing the advancement of the First U.S. Army after crossing the Siegfried Line in the Aachen area of Germany; Wallace's detailed account on serving with the First U.S. Army and its installation of the First Allied military government detachment in Germany; a cartoon regarding his stay in a Dutch camp; and his officer's commission certificate.

Wallace, William John Arthur, 1901-1974 : W.J.A. Wallace, army officer, was born in England and emigrated to Canada in 1916. Wallace joined the Army at sixteen and was soon stationed overseas. He was discharged in 1918, but by 1919, had again joined the military. Wallace remained in the military between the two world wars and in 1941, was transferred to England. In June 1944, following enrollment in a Civil Affairs and Military Government Course, Wallace was posted to the First U.S. Army. In August 1944, he was assigned to take over the Civil Affairs Detachment in Normandy, France. Following the advance into Germany and the establishment there of the first military government, Wallace was placed in charge of various repatriation camps, an UNNRA Transit Camp and a Russian Camp. He returned to Canada shortly thereafter and continued to hold various military positions.
