Fonds consists of correspondence, on political, business and family affairs 1862-1910; survey notebooks and diaries 1853-1902; memoranda and notes on politics, international affairs, the status of Irish Roman Catholics, government administration, public works and engineering [ca.1800-1900]; press clippings and printed matter; and related papers on local Ottawa problems including a biography of J.L.P. O'Hanly by his son, 1873-1949.

The fonds contains photographs of New Liskeard, Ont.; a garden party, 23 June 1905; tree planting; a portrait by Topley of Lady Ishbel Aberdeen on St. Patrick's Day, 1898; group portraits of men; J.L.P. O'Hanly; Mrs. Ernest Eversely Rogers; and Mrs. J.L.P. O'Hanly.

Also included is a Valentine's card with accompanying embossed, addressed and dated envelope sent to Miss Mary McDonald in 1856.

O'Hanly, J. L. P. (John Lawrence Power), 1829-1912 : John Lawrence Power O'Hanly emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1846. He moved to Aylmer in Canada East in 1851 where he indentured himself to a provincial land surveyor. He became a provincial land surveyor himself for both Canada East and Canada West, and in 1854 moved to Ottawa where he lived until his death. From 1854 to 1868 O'Hanly practised as a civil engineer doing survey work in Ontario and Quebec. In 1872 he was appointed a commissioner to represent Ontario in the Ontario-Quebec boundary survey, and from 1877 to 1881 he surveyed Indian reserves township outlines and boundaries in Manitoba for the Department of the Interior. In 1895 he was commissioned to report on the effect of the Chicago Drainage Canal on the levels of the Great Lakes.

A Roman Catholic and reformer of the old school, O'Hanly wrote many letters, articles and pamphlets. He was president of the St. Patrick's Literary Association of Ottawa from 1867 to 1868, and a promoter and organizer of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. He was unsuccessful in his attempt to win Russell in the Ontario provincial election of 1875.
