Kingsford, William, 1819-1898 : Born and education in London, England, William Kingsford enlisted in the 1st Dragoon Guards and came to Canada with his regiment in 1837. He received his discharge in 1841 and entered the office of the city surveyor of Montreal. Qualifying eventually as a civil engineer. Kingsford worked on such projects as the Hudson River Railway and the Panama Isthmus Railway.

Kingsford was then employed by the Grand Trunk Railway and worked for a short time as city engineer of Toronto. After leaving Canada in 1860, he was consulting engineer in Italy for a brief period, and returned to Canada in 1866. Kingsford was appointed engineer in charge of the harbours of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River by the Canadian government in 1873, but was dismissed in 1879 by the Minister of Public Works, Sir Hector Langevin.

Kingsford published a number of pamphlets, including "The History, Structure and Statistics of Plank Roads" (1852), "The Canadian Canals" (1865), and "Mr. Kingsford and Sir Hector Langevin" (1882), as well as a ten-volume history entitled THE HISTORY OF CANADA (London, 1887-1898). He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1886.
