Item is a note found by Dr. G. Hattersley-Smith in 1972 in a cairn at Hamilton Bluff, Clements Markham Inlet, northern Ellesmere Island, dated 14 May 1876. It bears the names of the sledge party commanded by Lieutenant Giffard of the H.M.S. ALERT.

Giffard, George Augustus, 1849-1925 : George Augustus Giffard entered the Royal Navy in 1862, and retired in 1913 with the rank of Admiral. He served on the Great Lakes in 1866, earning the Fenian Raid Medal, and on the H.M.S. NIOBE on the North American and West Indies Station. Giffard was Lieutenant abroad H.M.S. PENELOPE in the Egyptian campaign of 1882, and commanded H.M.S. WANDERER on the China Station. From 1899 to 1901 he was Commodore and Senior Naval Officer of the Newfoundland Fisheries, and Superintendent of the Chatham Dockyard from 1907 to 1909. During the Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876 he served aboard the H.M.S. ALERT.
