The series consists of records of John Ross Matheson's membership in the Masonic Order (Scottish Rite), and material collected by him relating to the history of freemasonry in Canada. It holds correspondence, certificates, programs, and bulletins of different Masonic lodges and preceptories, and speeches, addresses and other writings on Masonic history and traditions by Matheson himself, Archbishop William L. Wright, Dr. Charles A. Sankey, Meirion Griffiths, and Reginald V. Harris.

Some of the local, regional and national groups for which there are records include the Grand Imperial Conclave of Canada, Supreme Council of Canada, Grand Lodge of Ontario, Grand Lodge of Alberta, Grand Lodge of New York, Moore Sovereign Consistory (Hamilton), Gondemar Preceptory (Brockville), Queen's Lodge (Kingston), Heritage Lodge (Cambridge), True Britons' Lodge (Perth), Rupert H. MacNeill Conclave (Middleton, NS), St. Justin's Conclave (Aylmer, QC), Royal City Conclave (New Westminster, BC), Royal Edward Conclave (Halifax), Barrie Lodge of Perfection, and the Ottawa Shrine Club, among other clubs and lodges at the local level.
