24 photographs b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of a three volume unpublished memoir of George B. Lothian's career in aviation. Included in the fonds are a Canadian Hall of Fame biography; a list of senior Trans-Canada Air Lines employees; and an historical sketch of T.C.A., 1975-1976. The fonds also contains copies of original photographs, 1929-1968, depicting the career of Mr. Lothian.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Lothian, George, 1909- : George Lothian commenced flying at the Aero Club of B.C. in 1929, later joining the staff of Vancouver airport. When Trans-Canada Air Lines (now Air Canada) was formed in 1937 he became one of their first pilots. During World War II he was seconded to the North Atlantic Ferry Command becoming the first Canadian pilot to complete 100 air crossings of the North Atlantic. After the war he was a check pilot, and later a chief pilot for T.C.A. In 1952 he became superintendent of flying, remaining in that position until his retirement from T.C.A. in 1968, when he accepted the post of chief of the International Civil Aviation mission to Katmandu, Nepal, 1968-1973.Additional information:General note:Textual records acquired in 1976 from G.B. Lothian of Perth, Ont. Photographs were loaned to the National Archives of Canada by G.B. Lothian and copied.
