Fonds consists of the following series of textual records: speeches, lectures, and articles, 1934-1967; miscellaneous correspondence and clippings relating to Chisholm's 1945 William Alanson White Memorial Lecture, 1945-1946, 1952-1966; and memoranda and material related to Chisholm's military career and his work as Deputy Minister of Health and Director General of the World Health Organization, 1917-1971.

Fonds also consists of sound recordings of speeches by Chisholm on the topics of international relations and mental health, 1953-1957.

In addition, fonds includes a portrait of Dr. Brock Chisholm during his term of office as Director-General of the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland. Photo by Urs G. Arni.

Chisholm, George Brock, 1896-1971 : Dr. George Brock Chisholm, born at Oakville, Ont., enlisted as a private in the First World War in 1915. After service in France in which he won the Military Cross and Bar, he returned to Canada as a Captain. He received his medical degree in 1924 from the University of Toronto and later pursued post-graduate studies at Yale. He practised medicine for several years in Oakville and psychiatry in Toronto, 1934-1940.

During the Second World War he held a number of staff and headquarters appointments, reaching the position of Director General of Medical Services with the rank of Major General. In 1944 he was seconded to the Department of National Health and Welfare as Deputy Minister of Health. From 1946 to 1948 Dr. Chisholm served as Executive Secretary of the Interim Commission of the World Health Organization, United Nations, and from 1948 to 1953 he was Director-General of the World Health Organization.

In 1962 he became Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. He was the recipient of many and varied awards and associated himself with such movements as world federalism and peace research. He is the author of Prescription of Survival (New York 1957) and Can People Learn to Learn (New York 1958).
