Fonds consists of memoirs entitled "One Canadian Life", describing Armstrong's experiences and life in frontier Canada during the surveying and construction of the Intercolonial, the Canadian Pacific, the Grand Trunk and the Canadian Northern railways. Included sketches, blueprints and a list of positions held by Armstrong and references to the transporting of troops around Lake Superior during the Northwest Rebellion, 1885. Also included is a letter from Sandford Fleming to Christopher Armstrong, a copy of a letter to Murray Gibbon, a list of the original members of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (later the Engineering Institute of Canada) which includes Armstrong's name and a biographical sketch of Christopher Armstrong. An index to the Memoirs and a commentary on the Memoirs by Kenneth Coward supplement the information in the Memoirs.

Also included are photographs of views of Mr. Elmsley's survey camp, Little Sand Creek, B.C., 1897.

Armstrong, Harry William Dudley, 1842-1937 : Civil Engineer

Harry William Dudley Armstrong, son of Judge Christopher Armstrong and Mary Ann Geddes Armstrong, was born and educated in Bytown. At 15 he became an articled pupil of Sandford Fleming and eventually a civil engineer. He had professional experience in British Columbia during construction of the Crow's Nest Pass Railway 1897-1898. He was closely associated with the building of the Intercolonial, the Canadian Pacific, the Grand Trunk Pacific and the Canadian Northern Railways. Armstrong was a charter member of the Engineering Institute of Canada and from 1917-1927 was an assistant engineer for the Ontario Department of Highways.
