152 photographs some b&w.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of textual material including two volumes of Bishop Newnham's "diary", consisting of clippings, journal entries and letters, 1892-1898; and a small notebook of sermons and jottings, 1888, which apparently belonged to a Miss M. Henderson of Clifton, England.
Fonds also includes photographs depicting views of Moosonee, Ont.; First Nation camps; the wedding of Bishop Newnham; portrait of Mrs. Newnham; ships Lady Head and Mink; views of York Factory, Manitoba; an Anglican Church and school at Moose Factory, Ont.; a group of snowshoers including Bishop and Mrs. Newnham; Bishop Newnham's colleagues; Messrs. Renison, Walters, Holland, and Woodall; First Nation families; and a birch bark canoe under repair.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Newnham, Jervois Arthur, 1852-1941 : Jervois Arthur Newnham (1852-1941), ninth child of the Reverend George William Newnham (1806-1893) and Catherine Penneck Read, was born in England and educated at McGill. He was ordained in 1800, and held charges in Montreal until 1890 when he went to Moose Factory as a missionary. He was elected second bishop of Moosonee in 1893, leaving in 1904 to become bishop of Saskatchewan. Retiring from this position in 1921, he served as rector in Clifton, England and later retired in Hamilton, Ontario.
