Fonds consists of correspondence relating chiefly to the finances of Grant's church in Halifax, and the preparation of a biography of Principal Grant by his son W.L. Grant, 1855-1904; diaries chiefly of trips to Europe, Nova Scotia, etc., 1860-1902; memoranda and reports on Queen's University, the Presbyterian church, Imperial relations, Canadian history and politics, prohibition and women's rights; notes on classroom lectures and speeches; printed material including speeches, articles, obituaries and newspaper clippings, 1875-1914; miscellaneous material; family correspondence, 1866-1902; personal correspondence, 1870-1886; and copies of collected letters, 1876-1900.

The fonds also contains two photographic portraits inscribed to Major W.L. Grant, Principal of Upper Canada College, Toronto; one signed G. [Pery], the other, a group portrait, signed by members of La Mission Francais, 1919.

Grant, George M. (George Monro), 1835-1902 : Born in Nova Scotia, and educated at Glasgow University, George Monro Grant was ordained in the Church of Scotland ministry in 1860. After working as a missionary, he assumed charge of St. Mathew's Church in Halifax in 1863. He was moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1875 and he became moderator of the Presbyterian Church in 1889. From 1877 until his death he was principal of Queen's University. He was a member of the Imperial Federation League, a spokesman for ecumenicalism and the social gospel. He published works on imperialism, religion and travel.

The major part of the collection was acquired in 1955 and 1960 from G. M. Grant's daughter-in-law, Mrs. W.L. Grant. Family and personal correspondence acquired in 1967 from Mrs. Geoffrey Andrew. Copies of collected letters received in 1964 from Douglas Library, Queen's University.
