Hays, Harry William, 1909-1982 : Harry William Hays was born in Carstairs, Alberta and later moved to Calgary where he finished his education. In 1932, he became field man for the Holstein-Friesian Association and also took over the operation of his father's farm. His interest in exporting cattle began at that time. In 1933, he became the first Canadian to ship purebred dairy cattle to Britain and in later years to twenty-one other countries. As president of Hays Farms Ltd. at Oakville, Ontario in 1945, he became the first cattle exporter to ship by air. That same year he bought the family farm business outside Calgary, Hays and Company, of which he had long been manager.

In 1950 he and a partner initiated the idea of selling cattle by auction at organized public stockyards. He also inaugurated one of the world's outstanding livestock sales, the "Sale of Stars" at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1952. Along with his varied interests in agriculture, Mr. Hays was involved in various business and community organizations and activities. He was mayor of Calgary from 1959-1963 at which time he was elected to the House of Commons and served as Minister of Agriculture until his defeat in 1965. He was summoned to the Senate in February 1966; he became Agriculture Committee chairman in 1980 and also served as co-chairman of the joint Commons-Senate Constitutional Committee.
